The inspiring story of free-spirited artist Mickael Couturier, who embarked on a mission  to change the lives of the trash picker-kids of Bali by creating art with recycled plastic.

3 years in the making

We have been filming since 2021 all around Bali and most especially at the giant trash mountain of Suwung, where over 400 families survive by picking up plastic. We have established a special relationship with them and unique access to their stories and of those who help them.

FULL SYNOPSIS:

Filmed over the course of nearly three years, “The Art of Giving” provides a poignant and eye-opening glimpse into the lives of the trash pickers’ community in Suwung, Bali. 

Led by French artist Mickael Couturier and young cook Nicolas Kimman, the documentary showcases their personal mission to improve the lives of these marginalized individuals who live and work in deplorable conditions, rummaging through trash heaps in streets, dumps, and landfills. 

Through their efforts, Couturier and Kimman aim to bring attention to the pressing issue of waste management and its impact on both the environment and the health of the community. The documentary highlights the challenges faced by the trash pickers, who often live in extreme poverty and face hardships on a daily basis. 

Despite their difficult circumstances, the trash pickers in Suwung display incredible resilience and remarkable courage. Furthermore, they find joy and beauty amidst the plastic mess that surrounds them. These individuals, living in the midst of the waste that society has created, remind us of the madness of our own world.

The Art of Giving provides a compelling and emotional journey that showcases the power of human connection and the potential for change.
